BMI Bootcamp Fall 2024

Modern data analytics is indispensable across industries, including healthcare, where vast amounts of genomics, medical images, and electronic health record data are collected daily. Proficiency in accessing and analyzing such data is now a standard job market requirement. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is offering a two-part Fall semester programming bootcamp aimed at teaching undergraduate students the fundamental programming, data analytics, and machine learning skills essential for biomedical data informatics. Special topics such as Bioinformatics and NLP will also be briefly covered.

Part 1: Python Programming

Time: Sept. 4 - Sept. 18, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30PM - 8:30PM

Audience: Undergraduate students with no programming experience

Learning objectives:

  • Understand basics of programming using python
  • Get familiar with common libraries such as numpy, pandas and Matplotlib
  • Hands-on experience with different biomedical datasets: text, health record, images, gene sequences

Part 2: Biomedical Data Analytics and Machine Learning

Time: Sept. 23 - Oct. 2, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30PM - 8:30PM

Audience: Undergraduate students with basic python programming experience (or those who have taken Part 1 of the bootcamp)

Learning objectives:

  • Develop proficiency in utilizing fundamental data visualization techniques to effectively communicate and interpret biomedical data.
  •  Acquire a basic understanding of various machine learning techniques, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, feature selection, and dimensionality reduction,
  • Gain hands-on experience in leveraging ML techniques for predictive modeling in real-world biomedical datasets.
  • Explore and implement best practices for version control in coding

Bonus: Special Topics - Bioinformatics and Natural Language Processing

Time: Oct. 7 & Oct. 9, 6:30PM-8:30PM
