High School
HOPE Program—
Coordinated through Stony Brook University Hospital's Department of Community Relations, the HOPE (Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence) program promotes and fosters the development of promising high school students from underserved, racially and ethnically diverse communities, and strives to support them in pursuing a college education and future careers in the health care industry. Through classes and workplace shadowing experiences with Stony Brook faculty, they learn about their lives and the skills it takes to be nurses, physicians, physical therapists, laboratory technicians and other healthcare professions. Activities span two academic years and provide education, mentorship and volunteer opportunities. Participating districts include Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch.
The HOPE (Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence) program is part of Stony Brook Medicine's Health Initiative for Underserved Communities which strives to work closely with grassroots organizations to improve access to care, provide community health education programs and screenings, and support efforts to meet the needs of people living in underserved communities.
Stony Brook BMI has been an active participant in the program since the 2018-2019 academic year, with the activities culminating in an Informatics Bootcamp this year for all the students. This interactive, hands-on session, introduced the students to the field of Biomedical Informatics where we explored a data driven approach to understanding the health of the community in which one lives.
Undergraduate Education
VIP courses
Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP)
The VIP Program was established on a project-based model for higher education. It unites undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members in multidisciplinary teams that work on long-term projects in research, design, innovation and entrepreneurship. It provides a real-world context for course work, shapes career paths, and builds professional, teamwork, and leadership skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. Projects, teams, and participants are elevated by the broad knowledge, talents, and experiences assembled by engaging individuals from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The long-term nature of the projects provides students with the opportunity to grow as a team member, make substantial contributions, and rise through the ranks of team leadership.
Integrating Population Health Informatics
In conjunction with the School of Nursing and the Undergraduate College of Engineering BMI offers a Vertically Integrated Program or VIP course “Integrating Population Health Informatics.” A VIP course is a multidisciplinary project in which students participate in a multi-term, multidisciplinary project, working with team members ranging from sophomores through seniors and graduate students. The BMI sponsored course is framed within the context of population health informatics, but contributions are needed from a diverse array of disciplines, and thus the first class had PhD candidates in nursing, undergraduate students in engineering, biology and mathematics.

This course is required for anyone seeking a PhD in Nursing at Stony Brook. As an innovation in nursing education, it was selected for a podium presentation at the AACN’s 2021 Doctoral Education Conference in January 2021.

Graduate Education
BMI Graduate Program
The overarching mission of the graduate program in Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University is to train Biomedical Informatics professionals to make important discoveries, develop new technologies, and apply novel approaches Translational Bioinformatics, Imaging and Clinical Informatics. BMI offers an Advanced Graduate Certificate as well as the MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Informatics.
Medical School Education
Required Course
The required medical student course, “Transitions to Clinical Care; the new approach to improving population health,” integrates understanding the impact of social determinants of health and a data driven approach to address topical disease burden in Long Island- studying chronic diseases, the opioid crisis and cancer using innovative data exploration tools. This course uses population health interactive tools developed at Stony Brook by BMI (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26958160/, https://peerj.com/articles/6230/ ) faculty to explore the local population. This workshop type class, has an innovative curriculum integrating healthcare data with social determinants of health to give the students a wide view of healthcare issues in our community. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first, and we think the only, required Informatics course for medical students in the US. This novel hands-on curriculum was presented at the national 2019 AMIA Education Forum.
Medical Student Elective
BMI works closely with the Office of Medical Education, and offers elective courses for Medical students interested in Informatics. A variety of options area available from research independent study closes to more structured offerings. In Spring 220 over 20 medical students worked to extract data form 4,000 medical records of Covid patients, adding to the Stony Brook Covid19 Data Commons.
Resident Education
BMI Rotations for Residents
In conjunction with the Department of Family, Population & Preventive Medicine, BMI offers Elective month long rotations for Preventive Medicine Residents, who can take up to months throughout their Residency in BMI, working on projects, attending Journal clubs and lecture series. This cooperation has so far resulted in one physician completing a Certificate Program in Informatics, then going on to enroll in a Clinical Informatics Fellowship. He intends to pursue a career in Academics. A second physician joined the NYDOH where he works on Covid 19 Informatics.
BMI Lectures
BMI provides several lectures per year for the Preventive Medicine Residency
Fellowship Education
Radiology Informatics Fellowship
Imaging Informatics is a growing field with increasing interest internationally and BMI, working together with Dr. Gould in Radiology, founded a completely novel Fellowship Level Radiology Informatics program embedded in the Stony Brook radiology residency. This innovative program allows Radiology Residents to sub-specialize in informatics during their residency training. The program is both lecture and project based, with participants required both to publish an article in a major journal and to present at a national meeting. There is a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum, touching on all areas of the field from IT and PACs issues, to radiomic biomarkers. This is a selective program, by application only, and while all the first-year residents applied, only four were selected. We target a total of four new participants per year, with a total of 16 residents participating.
ACGME Accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship
Launched in 2019, this two year fully accredited Clinical Informatics fellowship graduates its first class in June 2021. The institution fully funds and supports four fellows, with a class of two matriculating each year. This program is open to US board-certified physicians seeking in-depth expertise in clinical informatics along with applications of clinical data analytics and machine learning applied to medical applications. Our program offers exposure to an environment of inter- disciplinary collaboration between clinicians, clinical informaticians, clinical data scientists, pathology and radiology informaticians and machine learning experts. The fellows also have an opportunity to obtain a Master in Informatics during their two years.
