NSF-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

Exploring Scalable Data Analytics

for Big Data at Stony Brook University

BMI Assistant Professor Fusheng Wang hosted a summer student funded under the NSF REU Program (Research Experience for Undergraduates).  The funding paid for her stipend, room and board while she worked on the project, Exploring Scalable Data Analytics for Big Data, under Dr. Wang’s supervision.  The program culminated in an SBU-wide poster session and research symposium for summer undergraduate researchers. As Dr. Wang explained, many scientific problems depend on the ability to analyze and compute on large amounts of data.

This analysis often does not scale well; its effectiveness is hampered by the increasing volume, variety and rate of change (velocity) of big data. We are working on developing next generation big data systems and methods to accelerate data analytics at large scale.  Funding for this REU project is associated with the NSF award “CIF21 DIBBs: Middleware and High Performance Analytics Libraries for Scalable Data Science”.
