Dr. Mary Saltz mentored students in the Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) program and she had a blast! HOPE is an after-school healthcare career exposure program for underserved youth from the Brentwood, Longwood, and Wyandanch school districts. Dr. Saltz and other faculty members introduced her student from Longwood to the world of biomedical informatics via observation of sign-out rounds, a graduate lecture on the microbiome, and interactive tools that the department has developed. The HOPE student also met some of our graduate students and learned about their career plans.
