On December 6, 2022, the Department of Biomedical Informatics and LINCATS held an exciting and educational bootcamp: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Driven Healthcare.
This event was open to all Stony Brook faculty, staff and students. It was an all-day long seminar and was designed to provide attendees with an understanding of the basic technology behind AI, strengths and limitations, and the ethical issues around the development and use of AI. Experts from BMI, the School of Medicine and institutions like the FDA discussed the recent and ongoing work in AI at Stony Brook across a wide variety of academic and professional disciplines.
The day began with opening remarks by Peter Igarashi, MD and Dean of Renaissance School of Medicine, followed by an event orientation by Dr. Mary Saltz, which kicked off the event.
The Bootcamp featured the following keynote speakers who gave informative talks pertaining to their backgrounds and expertise and the interesting work they have been doing in the field of artificial intelligence.

- Rajarsi Gupta, MD, PhD - Lifting the Hood on AI: How Does it Work?
- Prateek Prasanna, PhD - The Role of Domain Expertise in AI
- Brandon Gallas, PhD - Keynote on Artificial Intelligence and the FDA: A Regulatory Story
- Kartik Mani, MD, PhD - Radiation Oncology and AI
- Apostolos Tassiopoulos, MD; Kenneth Shroyer, MD, PhD; George Leibowitz, PhD, MSW - Clinical Issues and AI at Stony Brook
In the afternoon, the participants had a chance to sign up for one of four breakout sessions, which provided attendees an opportunity to immerse a little more deeply into recent research in the field of AI and engage with the researchers in a smaller and more intimate setting. Breakout topics included:
- Imaging Informatics – Prateek Prasanna, PhD
- Disease Surveillance: Aortic Aneurysms – Led by Apostolos Tassiopoulos, MD; Kayley Abell-Hart
- Pathology Informatics – Led by Kenneth Shroyer, MD, PhD; Joel Saltz, MD, PhD
- Disease Prediction: Opioid-Related Disorders – Led by George Leibowitz, PhD, MSW; and Fusheng Wang, PhD
Towards the end of the event, Veena Lingam, MD, Prateek Prasanna, PhD, Mary Saltz, MD and Ramana Davuluri, PhD discussed several career paths in AI at Stony Brook. Finally, Dr. Joel Saltz, Cherith Professor and Founding Chair of Department of Biomedical Informatics and Joe Cesaria, Chief Administrator of the department, ended the eventful day with closing remarks.
