BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dimitris Samaras received his diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the University of Patras, his MS from Northeastern University, and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Stony Brook University in 2000, where he is a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and director of the Computer Vision Lab. He received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2018 and Stony Brook University’s Outstanding Mentor Award in 2023.

RESEARCH

Dr. Samaras’s research spans computer vision, machine learning, and their applications to biomedicine. His long-standing collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Informatics has produced foundational deep learning methods for computational pathology, including patch-based convolutional neural networks for whole slide image classification and deep learning mapping of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. His core computer vision contributions include influential work on illumination modeling and face relighting, shadow detection and removal, crowd counting, document image rectification, and unsupervised disentangling of shape and appearance. He also works on neuroimaging analysis, machine learning for drug discovery, and modeling of human visual attention.
