BIOGRAPHY
 
Dr. Lawrence C. Hurst is an internationally recognized orthopaedic hand surgeon who chaired the Department of Orthopaedics at Stony Brook University Medical Center for 27 years. With his colleague Marie Badalamente, he discovered and developed injectable collagenase clostridium histolyticum for the nonoperative treatment of Dupuytren contracture, work that culminated in the landmark CORD I trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine and FDA approval of the therapy. In 2010 he received the Albion O. Bernstein, MD Award from the Medical Society of the State of New York for this contribution.
 
RESEARCH
 
Dr. Hurst’s research centers on Dupuytren disease and enzymatic fasciotomy, spanning the original preclinical development of collagenase therapy, pivotal randomized clinical trials, and studies of practice patterns, anticoagulation, recurrence, and treatment of finger joint contractures. His broader research portfolio includes flexor tendon pulley biomechanics, peripheral nerve recovery and adjuvant therapies, rapid point-of-care gout diagnostics, and technology-enabled surgical education, including collaborative work with computer scientists on anatomy-aware applications for evaluating hand lacerations.
