BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Margaret Schedel is a composer and cellist specializing in the creation and performance of ferociously interactive media. She earned her doctorate in music composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. At Stony Brook University she is Associate Professor of Composition and Computer Music, Co-Director of Computer Music, and Director of cDACT, the Consortium for Digital Arts, Culture and Technology. She co-chaired the 2010 International Computer Music Conference and the 2011 Electro-Acoustic Music Studies Network Conference, and she ran SUNY’s first massive open online course, an introduction to computational arts.
RESEARCH
Dr. Schedel’s research explores gesture in music, the sustainability of technology in art, and the sonification of data. Her work bridges the arts and the sciences, from machine learning systems for recognizing musical gesture to sonification of scientific data, including collaborative research with Stony Brook Medicine on music engagement in people with Parkinson’s disease. Her interactive compositions and multimedia works have been performed throughout the United States and abroad.
