BIOGRAPHY
 
Dr. Mathew Tharakan received his MD from Charles University in Prague and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and in Clinical Informatics, and he holds a Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics. A practicing internist turned clinical informaticist, Dr. Tharakan serves as Chief Medical Information Officer for Stony Brook University Hospital and as Program Director of the Stony Brook Medicine Clinical Informatics Fellowship. He was recognized by Physicians in AMIA (PIA) with the Applied Clinical Informatics Fellow of the Year Award.
 
RESEARCH
 
Dr. Tharakan’s work applies informatics methods to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of hospital care. His publications span clinical decision support redesign to align laboratory test ordering with evidence-based guidelines, the operational impact of high-sensitivity troponin on emergency department length of stay, rapid deployment of institutional analytics dashboards for resource allocation during the COVID-19 pandemic surge, deep learning on electronic health records to improve disease coding accuracy, and applications of deep learning in digital pathology. His earlier clinical research includes venous thromboembolism risk in trauma patients, linkage to care for hepatitis C-positive patients, and guideline adherence in the management of acute pancreatitis.
