BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Richard Moffitt earned his PhD in bioengineering from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, and completed postdoctoral training at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as Assistant Professor and graduate program director in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University before joining Emory University, where he is Associate Professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology with a joint appointment in Biomedical Informatics at the Winship Cancer Institute.
RESEARCH
Dr. Moffitt’s research uses computational and omics-based approaches to understand cellular heterogeneity in cancer, with a focus on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. His virtual microdissection work defined the widely used tumor and stroma molecular subtypes of pancreatic cancer, and his group developed PurIST, a clinically robust single-sample classifier for pancreatic tumor subtyping, along with pdacR, an open-source resource for exploration of pancreatic cancer gene expression data. He directs efforts to characterize tumor ecosystems using single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial sequencing, and spatial proteomics. As a leader within the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), he has also co-authored influential machine learning and electronic health record studies characterizing Long COVID.
