Education
Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective use of biomedical data, information and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, driven by efforts to improve human health. Our department’s membership in both the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences allow unique collaborative opportunities to students by interweaving fields from clinical science with data science.
BMI Graduate Program
The overarching mission of the graduate program in Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University is to train Biomedical Informatics professionals to make important discoveries, develop new technologies, and apply novel approaches Translational Bioinformatics, Imaging and Clinical Informatics. We offer an Advanced Graduate Certificate as well as the MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Informatics.
Stony Brook Fellowship in Clinical Informatics
The Stony Brook Fellowship in Clinical Informatics is a 2-year program for US board-certified physicians seeking in-depth expertise in clinical informatics along with applications of clinical data analytics and ma- chine learning applied to medical applications. Our program offers exposure to an environment of inter- disciplinary collaboration between clinicians, clinical informaticians, clinical data scientists, pathology and radiology informaticians and machine learning experts. The CI Fellowship is offered through Stony Brook Medicine’s Pathology Department; it is open to eligible candidates from any medical specialty.
BMI Clinical Informatics Bootcamps
Our CI Bootcamps are short (usually one-day), immersive experiences with leading experts exploring the challenges and opportunities to be found at the intersection between healthcare and data. Topics have included Job Paths in CI, Data Security, QI, Data-driven Population Health and Telemedicine.
BMI Research Experience for Undergraduates
BMI is one of several SBU hosts for the National Science Foundation-funded summer REU program.
BMI K-12 Outreach
The Computer Science and Informatics Summer Research Experience (CSIRE) summer program offers opportunities for high school students to participate in research with mentors from the Department of Biomedical Informatics, the Department of Computer Science and others.
