Professor Joel H. Saltz, BMI Department Chair and Clinical Associate Professor Gerald Kelly, affiliated BMI faculty and Chief Medical Information Officer for Stony Brook Medicine, are among the latest recipients of Clinical Informatics Board Certification. They join Professor Laura Fochtmann as members in this newly-devised subspecialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2011, which uses computer and information systems for the care and benefit of the patient.
The Board Certification was developed in response to growing demand from clinicians for formal training and credentialing. The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) sponsored the formal application for this new subspecialty examination to the American Board of Medical Specialty (ABMS), which then provided extensive review of the application through its specialty boards and the ABMS Committee on Certification (COCERT). The proposal was approved by the ABMS Board in a vote on September 21, 2011. The first exam was administered in the Fall of 2013.
At Stony Brook’s new Department of Biomedical Informatics, we train students to become leaders in the field. Educational opportunities offered by the graduate programs leading to the PhD, MS, or Advanced Graduate Certificate. Currently based at the Stony Brook Campus, BMI is planning to expand availability of the Clinical Informatics track MS degree to Manhattan in late 2018. A fellowship in Clinical Informatics is also being organized as part of the Stony Brook Medicine campus offerings.
A new and growing field, Biomedical Informatics applies advanced computing and information technology to patient care. The BMI Department at Stony Brook was established in late 2013 with the recruitment of Founding Chair and Cherith Professor Dr. Joel Saltz. Our faculty and technical staff continue to grow and the Department’s funding portfolio now includes grants and contracts from the National Cancer Institute, the National Library of Medicine and the National Science Foundation. Specialty projects include Data visualization, Integrated Data Analysis and Population Health and Quality Care.
